The British Academy of Jewellery (BAJ) has unveiled an exciting partnership with renowned luxury jewellery house Graff, offering an exclusive opportunity for first-year students enrolled in BAJ’s BA (Hons) Jewellery Design & Production degree. This collaboration marks a significant milestone for both institutions, combining educational excellence with industry expertise to nurture emerging talent in the field of jewellery design.
The Prestigious Players: BAJ and Graff
Established in 1999, the British Academy of Jewellery has earned a reputation as a leading institution dedicated to fostering talent and delivering top-tier education in jewellery design and craftsmanship. With a focus on blending traditional techniques with modern technologies, BAJ equips students with the skills needed for success in the ever-evolving jewellery industry.
Graff, founded in 1960 by Laurence Graff OBE, stands as an iconic figure in the high jewellery sector, renowned for its unparalleled craftsmanship and exquisite diamond creations. The company’s commitment to excellence and attention to detail has solidified its position at the forefront of the luxury jewellery market, making it a coveted partner for aspiring jewellery designers.
A Unique Challenge for Students
As part of the collaboration, Graff has provided each student with a resin 3D print of a pear-shaped white diamond, derived from the historic 18.38-carat Graff Lesedi La Rona rough diamond. This rare gem, alongside its remarkable satellite stones, serves as the focal point for students tasked with designing a Graff-inspired jewellery piece that showcases the diamond’s inherent beauty and brilliance.
Nurturing Creativity and Technical Skills
Under the guidance of industry professionals and BAJ faculty, students will embark on a journey to translate their creative vision into tangible designs using computer-aided design (CAD) software. With access to state-of-the-art facilities, including expert instruction in stone setting techniques, students will hone their skills and tackle the technical challenges associated with crafting high-end jewellery pieces.
Industry Recognition and Opportunities
The culmination of this project will see students’ designs evaluated by esteemed figures from Graff, including Mr Raymond Graff and Sam Sherry Workshop General Manager. The winning student will earn a coveted two-week internship at Graff, providing invaluable hands-on experience within one of the world’s most prestigious high jewellery houses.
Fostering Career Development and Industry Insights
Graham Willis, Head of Higher Education at BAJ, underscores the significance of industry partnerships in enhancing students’ career prospects and understanding of industry standards. By aligning with Graff, BAJ students gain exposure to evolving industry trends and invaluable insights into the expectations and demands of the workplace.
A Fusion of Education and Industry Excellence
This collaboration represents a powerful synergy between education and industry, offering students a platform to showcase their talents on a global stage. As BAJ and Graff anticipate the innovative designs that will emerge from this initiative, both institutions remain committed to supporting the growth and development of the next generation of jewellery designers.
