SaferGems, the industry crime prevention and intelligence-sharing body, urges travelling sales reps and traders to increase their vigilance following aimed at sales representatives across the UK
A Disturbing Trend
In a concerning event on March 20th in Preston, Lancashire, a sales representative fell victim to a high-value theft when two individuals, believed to be either Asian or South American, broke into his vehicle and stole bags containing valuable jewellery and cash.
This incident is part of a growing trend, with SaferGems reporting 21 similar incidents across England and Scotland over the past year. These crimes, often involving distraction thefts, snatches, and sophisticated tracking devices placed on vehicles, have displayed a high level of coordination and planning, sometimes involving up to seven suspects.
Recent Arrests and Call to Action
In a separate but related incident, Edgar Ardila Ruiz admitted to stealing jewellery valued at over £2 million from a parked car at a Shell petrol station forecourt in London Road, Wrotham, on January 18th. His arrest, along with Monica Diaz and another unnamed individual, was part of an investigation into a criminal gang targeting jewellery traders. The gang’s operations highlight the ongoing threat to individuals transporting high-value goods.
SaferGems, alongside national police forces, is actively working to combat these crimes and urges anyone with information to come forward. These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the risks associated with transporting valuable goods and the importance of implementing stringent security measures.
Implications for the Jewellery Industry
These thefts not only result in significant financial losses but also pose a threat to the safety of individuals within the industry. Jewellers and sales representatives are advised to review and enhance their security protocols, especially when travelling with high-value items. Coordination with local law enforcement and participation in industry-wide intelligence-sharing initiatives are essential steps in mitigating the risk of future thefts.
