The Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) will introduce a revised version of its Gemmology Diploma in September 2026, with an updated syllabus covering developments in gemmology, technology, research and industry terminology.
Course Follows Foundation Syllabus Update
The diploma’s theoretical and practical components have both been revised. It will be available to students attending in person, those studying through Gem-A’s online distance learning programme and learners enrolled at accredited teaching centres overseas.
The changes follow an overhaul of Gem-A’s Gemmology Foundation course in 2025. The Foundation course is a prerequisite for the diploma.
Gem-A chief executive Cath Hill said: “Countless hours have gone into ensuring our educational journey, from our beginner’s level GemIntro course to our flagship Gemmology Diploma, is academically robust and industry relevant. This latest overhaul completes our total upgrade of gemmology teaching, and I look forward to celebrating with the pioneering class of 2027.”
Qualification Taught Across 19 Countries
Established in 1908, the Gemmology Diploma is taught in five languages across 19 countries. Graduates who complete the qualification can use the association’s FGA postnominals.
Diploma holders work in fields including gemmological research, jewellery design, valuation, auctioneering, retail, wholesale and education.
Commenting on the qualification, Hill added: “Its rigour is exactly why the FGA postnominals are recognised and respected across the global gem and jewellery industry.”
Implications for Jewellery Businesses
The curriculum update comes as jewellers manage developments in gemstone treatments, synthetic materials, laboratory-grown stones, testing equipment and disclosure terminology.
For retailers, valuers and auction houses, current gemmological training can assist with product identification, accurate descriptions and customer communication. The different study routes also make the qualification available to working professionals and international students who cannot attend Gem-A’s London facilities full-time.
