The National Association of Jewellers has opened registration for its 2026 Valuers’ Conference, supported by headline sponsor Bonhams, which will take place from 16 to 17 May 2026 at Edgbaston Park Hotel, Birmingham.

The two day conference brings together valuers, retailers, designers, students and other jewellery professionals, with a programme focused on valuation practice, gemmology, watches and specialist materials. The event contributes to continuing professional development for both new and established practitioners.

    Keynote Speaker Programme

The first day will feature six keynote speakers from across jewellery, diamonds, watches and gemmology.

Francesca Cartier Brickell, author of The Cartiers, will speak on the history of Cartier, drawing on her independent research into the Cartier family archives. For valuers and retailers, brand heritage and provenance form part of the assessment process in the secondary market.

Jonathan Darracott, Global Head of Watches at Bonhams, will address developments in the watch sector. A watchmaker and auctioneer, he has overseen major private collections at auction, including the 2,000 piece Collection of a European Nobleman. The inclusion of watch expertise highlights the role of horology within valuation work and retail portfolios.

Mark Cullinan, chief executive of Cullinan Diamonds and great grandson of Sir Thomas Cullinan, will provide insight into the diamond sector, with experience spanning grading, rough supply and prospecting. Insight into the supply chain may assist valuers when considering methodology and current market levels.

Dr Yun Luo, Director of Metrology and Quality Control at GIA, will discuss measurement science and laboratory processes in diamond grading. Instrumentation, consistency and quality assurance are relevant to valuers who rely on laboratory reports in insurance and probate work.

Sarah Caldwell Steele, Curator of Jet at Whitby Museum, will examine the identification and classification of ancient carbonaceous materials. Jet and jet like materials continue to appear in antique and heirloom jewellery, making accurate identification important for valuation and retail purposes.

Justin K Prim, a gemcutter and founder of the Faceting Apprentice Institute, will speak on gemcutting traditions. Cut quality and historical cutting styles affect value assessments and attribution.

    Workshops and Masterclasses

Day two will focus on practical masterclasses and workshops, with sessions extended to two hours. The format allows more detailed exploration of specialised subjects and supports continuing professional development requirements for registered valuers and those working towards accreditation.

The programme combines keynote presentations with applied workshops, addressing technical competency and documentation standards within the valuation sector.

    Gala Dinner and IRV Recognition

A gala dinner will take place on the Saturday evening, during which the David Wilkins Award will be presented. The event will also recognise newly appointed members and fellows of the Institute of Registered Valuers.

Heather Callaway, IRV Chair, said: “We are delighted to open registration for this year’s Valuers’ Conference and even more pleased to announce a fantastic line-up of international speakers. With more exciting announcements planned soon, we are confident that this year’s Conference will be one of the best yet.”
